Where to start depends on a few things:

The type of use the veranda gets.
Do you need to BBQ out there
Do children need room to play (you said it runs the length of the house, so assume this is your backyard per se)
What does the veranda face.
How much sun, light is there for plants.

You’ve mentioned all the usual ideas. Chaises are great if you like to lounge or the veranda faced a view.

A couple of things that I think would help would be to use a room planner to play with different set ups. BHG.com has one.

If you don’t belong to any decorating forums, this is a great question for one. Most magazines have a message board.
