Since both rooms are small is would be best to chose a light color giving the illusion that the spaces are bigger than they really are. You want to be sure that all the colors you chose transition well from room to room. Also, take into consideration the natural lighting that comes into the space and how it will effect the value of the colors you chose. Painting a sample of the color you are thinking of on the wall is usually a good idea before painting an entire wall. Lavender and white look very good together, very crisp and light. I think that a light tan, beige or sandy color like you said would be very suitable for kitchen cabinets as well. Take into consideration the type of paint such as semi gloss or matte paints because some are more suitable then others in spaces where there is more moisture (such as a kitchen). Hope some of this helps and good luck with the decorating.
